Why read the Bible?
Why read the Bible?
I was having a conversation with my children and I asked them a question.
" Why do we need to study the Bible?"
And they gave me some great answers. One said "because it will help us" and one answered " because that is what we are suppose to do".
Both answers were true, but I had to take it a step further and explain to them why it was important for us as christians to read and study the Bible.
The word of God is so many things in our lives. It will help us if we would dive deep into it.
When we get in to the Bible, we will find out so many thing that we can apply to our lives.
The Word of God Guides Us
This weeks scripture for the week is Psalm 119:105 which says:
"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto our path".
It is funny I started writing this blog about a week ago and when I went to get the scripture for the week, this is what God showed me.
The word of God gives us direction and guides us in our lives.
When it seems dark and we have no idea which way we should go, Gods word will guide us in the right direction. It will show us how as christians we should conduct ourselves.
The word is a light illuminating the way to Christ.
Before we became christians, we were in a dark place. But when we became christians and began to read and study the Bible, we were able to see Christ and what he has done for us to have eternal life.
When we don't know what we should be doing with our lives, it will help us make the right decisions and guide us on the path that we should be on.
It feed Us
1 Peter 2:2 says:
" As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby."
When a baby is born, it needs milk to grow big and strong. It does not come out the womb wanting steak and potatoes. It has to start out being fed milk. The milk helps make the baby grow big and strong to be able to get to the steak and potatoes.
Same thing with the Bible. When we first get saved, we start reading and studying it to learn what's in it. As we study and we read, we began to grow because the word of God is feeing us wisdom, and knowledge, and we are learning more and more about God and what he requires from us and his children.
The more we read and study the Bible, then we will get to the point that we can consume the "steak and potatoes"
We will begin to get a more deeper understanding and we will be able to grow big and strong in the word of God.
It Protects us
Ephesians 6:17 says:
"And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:"
One thing that we can be sure of in this life, is being protected by the word of God. It help us fight against things that may come our way.
It will help us handle the situations that may be difficult for us.
The word of God equips us with things that we can use to defend ourselves. In us defending ourselves, God is always there protecting us.
I don't know about you, but when I feel like everything bad that come out my way, God always gives me a scripture to show me how he protects me and how I can get through a certain situation.
It saves us
1 Peter 1:23 says:
"Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever".
Getting into the word of God and studying it will help us get closer to God and understand what he did for us. It will show us how to get saved and have Jesus become the savior of our lives.
Reading about how God sent his only son (Jesus) to die on the cross for my sins just makes me happy. Knowing I did not have to stay in my sinful state.
It shows us ourselves in our sinful ways, and shows us a way to get rid of our sins and become saved and live for eternity with him.
It Teaches Us
2 Timothy 2:15 says:
" Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."
Moist importantly once we get saved, the Bible teaches us about God and what Jesus did for us. It shows us how to live our lives. Bible comes from a Greek word meaning "the books". So it is a book full of books with different lessons that we as christians need to learn for our lives.
The acronym for Bible is
Basic
Instructions for
Believers to
Live
Eternity
That is what I was taught some people say the acronym is
Basic
Instructions
Before
Leaving
Earth
Ether way, the Bible is what we use to live our live according to what God has told us to do. It teaches us what to do, and what not to do.
It protects us from things that is not of God.
It feeds us the word so we can grow in God and do his will for our lives
It teaches us valuable lessons in life that we will able to use on a daily bases.
Most importantly, it saves us from our sins and show how to live a Godly life.
There are so many examples in the bible that teaches us so may different lessons.
So going back to the question that I asked my children, " why is it important to read the Bible"?
Because without it, living this life would be hard.
God Bless.
